Flora

Due to the low rainfall, Lanzarote mainly grows plant species that can be classified as cacti and succulents. To survive the long summer dry season, many of them have the ability to store water in their leaves and stems. In spring, however, the vegetation comes to life after winter rains. Young green sprouts and the semi-desert is transformed into a carpet of flowers. Spring-flowering plants include the Canary Island wild marigold, the great usherflower and the crystal midday flower (also known as monocots or soda plant). There are 16 endemic plant species on the island, which means that they are exclusively native to Lanzarote. A further 54 plant species can only be found on the other islands of the archipelago apart from Lanzarote. Botanically, the mountain ranges and wind-exposed cliffs are particularly productive.
