Festivals and holidays

Spaniards love to celebrate - and especially here on the Canary Islands there are many local holidays. In addition to the statutory holidays, every town on the island is free to choose its own two days of celebration, which are usually dedicated to the patron saint. As a result, many festivals are celebrated. Festivals and events February/March: Carnival - Parades in Puerto del Carmen, Haría, Arrecife and the "Burial of the Sardine". March/April: Semana Santa - Spanish Holy Week with magnificent processions in Arrecife. May/June: Corpus Christi - On the eve, paintings of coloured salt are made in the large squares. 24 June: Fiesta de San Juan - Harvest and solstice festival, with bonfires lit beforehand at night. July: Wine Festival - Wine festivals with dancing and music are held in the wine-growing region of La Geria. 07 July: Fiesta de Dan Marcial del Rubicón - In Femés the patron saint of Lanzarote is honoured for a week. 16 July: Fiesta de Nuestra Señora del Carmen - Processions in honour of the patron saint of fishermen, parades in Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen. 08 August: Fiesta de la Virgen de los Remedios - Commemoration of the patron saint with processions in Yaiza. 15 September: Romería de Mancha Blanca - Festival in honour of the Virgin Dolores (Sorrows). 24 December: Fiesta de los Ranchos de Pascua - Processions in Teguise. Folklore and music from midnight.
