Climate
The Canary Islands owe their balanced climate to the Atlantic Ocean and the trade winds. The Canary Current, a cool to moderately warm ocean current in the north-eastern Atlantic, ensures that temperatures remain pleasant even in summer. The daily average is about 25ºC, and in winter it still averages 17ºC. However, the mild climatic conditions should not hide the fact that the sun has a very high radiation intensity in these latitudes. It is therefore advisable to wear protective headgear during the first few days, to regularly use sunscreen with a high sun protection factor and to seek out shady places during the midday hours. A special weather phenomenon is the "Calima", a wind coming from the east and carrying fine sand particles from the Sahara. Temperatures of up to 45 degrees Celsius are not uncommon during this time.
