Pájara

The current municipality of Pájara is the result of a process of territorial segregations and incorporations with respect to the limits and demarcations corresponding to the time of the seigniory (15th to 19th century). It is difficult to obtain documentary information prior to the 19th century, given the loss of funds and archives caused by the frequent pirate attacks that Lanzarote suffered throughout modern times. However, it is possible to study the history of Pájara from 1834 onwards, when the town council was formally established in the 1812 Cortes of Cádiz. From the 17th century onwards, the ports of the south (Herradura, Río de Cabras, Pozo Negro, Gran Tarajal, Giniginámar, La Pared and La Casa de la Señora) were the most powerful link with the outside world. Livestock and orchilla will go through them to the rest of the archipelago and Europe. Jandía and its small jetties will be strategic points of departure for the orchilla.
