The Central Highlands

The Central Highlands The interior and centre of the island is characterised by the highest mountains of Gran Canaria and a unique landscape. The "Roque Nublo" (1803 m) is the mysterious misty rock and used to be considered a sanctuary. At the "Pico de Las Nieves" (1949 m) there is a magnificent panorama over the whole island - in good weather you can even see Tenerife. In winter, the snowy peak can live up to its name, because "las nieves" means snow. The centre and highest pass of the island is "Cruz de Tejeda" (1490 m) with flowering wild plants. Lined with almond trees, the largest sunken crater on the island lies at its feet, 25 km in diameter. It offers a view as if the jagged mountain ridges continued into infinity. Roque Bentaiga (1404 m) was once a sacred place, a ritual place of worship and sacrifice. The mountain villages of Santa Lucia, San Bartolomé, Fataga and Artenara shine with their breathtaking beauty.
