Icod de los Vinos

Icod de los Vinos is a municipality in the northwest of the island with 23,496 inhabitants (as of 22). Here you will find the famous dragon tree, the Drago Millenario, around which many myths entwine. Translated, the name means "thousand-year-old dragon tree"; estimates of up to 3,000 years have even been circulated. However, these figures have been refuted by studies and it is now assumed that the real age is around 400 years. If you are already there, why not take a short detour to the Mariposario del Drago, the butterfly house, which is located in the immediate vicinity. Above the park with the dragon tree is the church of San Marcos, which was built in the 16th century. Worth mentioning here are the Renaissance portal, the church ceiling made of Tea (wood of the Canary Island pine) and the Baroque altar with silver ornaments. The filigree silver cross was made in Cuba. The Cueva del Viento (Cave of the Wind) is one of the longest lava caves in the world. A guided tour of part of the tube is available by appointment. In the San Marcos district is the beach of the same name made of black volcanic sand.
