Festivals and holidays

Spanians love to celebrate - and especially here on the Canary Islands there are many local holidays. In addition to the statutory holidays, every town on the island is free to choose its own two days of celebration, which are usually dedicated to the patron saint. As a result, many festivals are celebrated. Carnival is also celebrated everywhere here - did you know that Santa Cruz has the second largest carnival in the world after Rio de Janeiro? Another peculiarity: If a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the "free" day is shifted to the next working day without further ado. However, this "custom" has changed somewhat in recent years, so that this usually only applies to religious holidays.
