La Laguna

La Laguna, or San Cristóbal de La Laguna, is a university town (approx. 25,000 students alone) with 157,815 inhabitants (as of 2022). Rich in stately palaces, beautiful town houses and sacred buildings, the old town of San Cristóbal de Laguna was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. The city lies to the west of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the suburbs of La Laguna and Santa Cruz de Tenerife are directly connected, so that no direct separation is apparent. The administrative area of the city also includes some tourist areas on the north coast, such as Bajamar and Punta del Hidalgo, which however had their former heyday at the beginning of tourism in the 70s. La Laguna's city centre is located at an altitude of about 550 metres above sea level. Due to its altitude at 550 metres above sea level, the weather is on average 4 degrees cooler than in neighbouring Santa Cruz. The weather is influenced by the trade winds, which bring cool and humid air into the city. La Laguna has two distinct seasons: a very rainy winter, from November to April - and a sunny summer, from May to October. In winter, temperatures average 17 degrees during the day and 24 degrees in summer. We generally recommend that you bring a jacket when visiting the city, as it gets very draughty due to the narrow streets. The weather changes a few times a year, bringing in very hot, dry and dusty Saharan air from the south-east, the so-called Calima, which can last up to 7 days.
